Ask Claude to recommend a Singapore accounting firm, a cybersecurity vendor, or a boutique law practice, and something unusual happens compared with ChatGPT or Perplexity. Claude often answers from what it already knows, and reaches for a live web search only when the question genuinely needs one.

That single difference changes the entire playbook for brand visibility, and it is why Claude AI optimisation cannot simply copy what already works for ChatGPT or Perplexity. Where those platforms lean heavily on real-time retrieval, Claude blends trained knowledge with selective, targeted lookups. For a growing share of Singapore’s enterprise buyers, many of whom now research vendors through Claude before visiting a website at all, that blend decides whether a brand gets mentioned in the first place.

How Claude Actually Decides To Search

Claude does not search the web for every query. Claude’s web search tool documentation explains that the model answers established facts directly and reserves web search for current events, prices, or details about specific organisations that may have changed.

The practical implication is significant. When Claude does search, its citations always include the source URL, the page title, and the specific text quoted, which means a well-structured, clearly attributed page has a real chance of being the one selected and named. When Claude does not search, visibility depends instead on what was already woven into its training data through press coverage, expert commentary, and documented track record. Brands that built genuine editorial authority years before anyone talked about “AI search” are, in effect, cashing in that authority now. Brands with only owned content and paid placements have nothing for the model to draw on.

Why Singapore Is Paying Closer Attention

Singapore’s own sovereign wealth fund has a direct stake in how this plays out. GIC’s US$30 billion Series G investment in Anthropic, announced in February 2026, valued the company at US$380 billion and followed an earlier US$13 billion round the fund had already backed. For local businesses, that level of institutional commitment from a homegrown investor signals that Claude is no longer a niche research tool for developers, but an increasingly standard part of how professional buyers evaluate vendors, including in regulated sectors such as financial services and legal practice where Claude’s careful, reasoning-heavy style already has a following.

What Actually Earns A Citation In Claude

Because Claude leans on trained knowledge for anything that is not time-sensitive, the material that shaped that training carries outsized weight.

A handful of factors consistently separate brands Claude cites from brands it overlooks, and none of them are especially exotic.

Building Content Claude’s Crawler Can Actually Find

None of this works if the crawler cannot read the page in the first place. ClaudeBot needs to be explicitly allowed in robots.txt, core claims and credentials need to sit in server-rendered HTML rather than behind JavaScript a crawler may not execute, and pages need to load reliably enough that a single failed fetch does not quietly remove a brand from consideration. Getting this right, and keeping it right as crawler behaviour evolves, is usually more than a one-off technical audit can cover, which is why businesses that treat it as an ongoing discipline, often through a structured Claude optimisation programme that pairs technical access with the corroboration and credentials covered earlier, tend to see citations build steadily instead of arriving as a one-off spike.

Measuring Whether Any Of This Is Working

Standard analytics were not built for this. A brand can be cited by Claude in a research conversation a buyer never reveals with a click, and the dashboard shows nothing happened.

This is not unique to Claude. AI summaries cut click-through rates on Google from roughly one in seven searches to about one in twelve when a summary appears above the results, Pew Research Center found, and a mere one percent of users click the specific link cited inside that summary. The same pattern almost certainly holds across other AI-mediated research tools, Claude included. Treating a flat or falling click count as proof that visibility efforts have failed is, increasingly, the wrong read of the data.

What tends to work better is tracking brand mentions directly: how often a name comes up in relevant Claude conversations, whether it is framed as a recommended option or a passing reference, and whether branded search volume is climbing even as raw referral clicks stay flat. Being named as the recommended option carries more weight than click volume ever will, and those signals need tools built for AI visibility, not repurposed web analytics.

Where This Leaves Singapore Brands

Claude will not behave like the other platforms covered in this guide, and treating it as an afterthought within a broader AI search plan is a missed opportunity given where Singapore’s enterprise buyers are already heading.
